Our Youth Forum: One flame, many stories…

Skylight’s Youth Form meet monthly to make plans, share plans and change plans (for the better). Two of our members wanted to share a post about Spotlight’s experience performing at Ignite Fire Festival this year. Enjoy!

This is the 2nd year of taking part in Ignite and we couldn’t have enjoyed it more. The support of our team, the energy of the crowd, made the fire in our hearts burn brighter.

Spotlight started our rehearsals only three weeks before the show, and we were so exited to have the opportunity to take part again.

During rehearsals, we worked as a team to create a compelling routine so we could show progress and improvement from our show last year. We enjoyed exploring different movements with our choreographer Gil.

Before our performance, we explored different face painting techniques which helped us feel individual but also connected as a whole group. We were inspired by the travelling light circus and their fire performance.

This made us feel motivated to attend next year as you could feel the buzz when we stepped on stage.

Thank you for taking the time to read our blog,

Louisa & Ethan

How Circus Arts Is Supporting Teachers, Learners and Schools!

How Circus Arts Is Supporting Teachers, Learners and Schools!

8 Ways That Bringing A Circus Workshop To Schools Supports Curriculum Learning In The Classroom

For over 30 years we’ve been taking circus into schools around the North West, from early years right up to universities.

Our delivery team is made up of creatives and educators, all with a passion for improving lives through achievment in circus, we’ve seen it work time and time again.

Whether it’s a reception class mesmerised by how they can balance a spinning plate on their finger, or a group of Year 10’s launching a diabolo into the air, circus has this incredible way of brining people to light through play. It’s about trying something new, having fun and perhaps for the first time in a long while shouting “LOOK I CAN DO IT!” And, it’s even better when the teachers get involved! That moment changes everything and it starts to spill into every day life AND the classroom.

The change in some of my class has been incredible. One of my students who’s been having SALT for the past few years, struggles to speak up in full class settings, after our circus sessions with Skylight he’s started to share his ideas to the class, to the point that now he’s the first to put up his hand. They’re already asking when Skylight are back.

8 Reasons Circus Arts should be a part of every school curriculum

1. Circus builds confidence in ways that feel safe and achievable

  • Circus gives children instant, visible success even small successes feel huge.
  • A child who normally stays quiet suddenly beams after managing a scarf juggle.
  • Someone who finds PE overwhelming discovers a skill that suits their body and pace.
  • Children who rarely feel proud of themselves get a chance to shine.

In our recent projects, over 90% of young people told us their confidence improved after taking part. That’s because circus is playful, non-judgemental and encourages bravery in tiny, manageable steps.

2. It strengthens social skills, communication and teamwork

Circus naturally encourages:

  • taking turns
  • cheering each other on
  • sharing ideas
  • asking for help
  • supporting the person next to you

We often see pupils who don’t normally mix suddenly working together, laughing and problem-solving. The barriers drop. Everyone becomes part of the circle.

Children learn that success isn’t just doing the trick, it’s supporting someone else to get there too.

3. It’s brilliant for mental health and emotional wellbeing

Because circus is physical, playful and absorbing, it helps children regulate, reset and reconnect.

It supports young people with:

  • anxiety
  • low mood
  • trauma
  • neurodiversity
  • big emotions and sensory needs

Teachers regularly tell us children return to class calmer, more grounded and more able to focus.

4. Circus quietly develops physical literacy and motor skills

Everything we do, juggling, balancing, spinning, creative movement helps with:

  • fine and gross motor development
  • spatial awareness
  • hand–eye coordination
  • posture and balance
  • bilateral movement (using both sides of the body)

These are essential building blocks for writing, reading, sports and everyday classroom tasks.

5. It boosts creative thinking and problem-solving

Circus is full of gentle challenges.

Children learn to:

  • try, adjust, try again
  • break things down
  • experiment
  • take safe risks
  • explore ideas through their bodies

This builds resilience, the kind that quietly follows them back into their lessons.

6. Circus creates belonging, connection and positive classroom culture

The circus ethos is simple:

Everyone has something they can do, something they can learn and something they can teach.

There’s no “best” or “right” body.
No ability hierarchy.
No pressure to be perfect.

That’s why children who feel different, masked, overwhelmed or “on the outside” often thrive in our workshops. They feel seen, they feel safe and they feel part of something.

We’ve had parents tell us:

“Skylight Circus lets my child be their real self, no masking, no pressure, just acceptance.”

7. Circus supports the curriculum (and makes learning irresistible)

Our workshops strengthen:

  • PE (balance, movement, control, strength)
  • PSHE (confidence, teamwork, resilience)
  • English (instructions, language development, communication)
  • Arts (performance, choreography, story telling)
  • SEND provision (sensory regulation, motor skills, emotional support)
  • Enrichment & cultural learning

Schools use circus for everything from targeted wellbeing groups to whole-school creative days, reward activities and transition programmes.

  • One off tasters
  • Full school experiences
  • Morning sessions
  • Long term projects working towards performances
  • Speciality sessions for SEND / SEMH
  • Specific skill development for higher education

Tailored to your school, your pupils and your needs! Get in touch and we’ll make the magic happen.

8. The impact lasts far beyond the workshop

We regularly see children:

  • finding the bravery to try new things
  • bringing more confidence back into lessons
  • forming new friendships
  • becoming young leaders
  • joining our youth classes or volunteering
  • discovering creative pathways they didn’t know existed

Some even end up in our Youth Circus or Spotlight troupe, gaining further training, stage experience and opportunity to have paid roles.

The seeds planted in one workshop often grow for years.

How Circus Impacts on Children’s Language and Literacy Development

How Circus Impacts on Children’s Language and Literacy Development

How Circus Skills are Transforming Lives

In recent years, the challenges facing young people’s language and literacy development have been widely reported across the UK. National waiting lists for speech and language referrals continue to grow, leaving many children without the timely support they need.

At Skylight Circus Arts, our Circus Train the Trainer programme has stepped up to meet this need, offering a unique, evidence-based solution that is changing lives and advancing educational outcomes, one circus skill at a time.

The Language and Literacy Crisis in UK Schools

According The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, more than 75,000 children in the UK are on waiting lists for specialist language and literacy support. With primary schools particularly affected by this gap, teachers are seeking creative solutions to stimulate learning and personal development. Through Circus Train the Trainer, we have developed a programme that not only delivers immediate improvement but also brings joy and engagement to the learning process.

Circus: A New Approach to Development

Rochdale Primary school teachers and teaching assistants with their Skylight Circus Train the Trainer resource packs.

Our Circus Train the Trainer programme empowers primary schools to support children in new, impactful ways. Designed as a flexible cascade learning model, it trains teachers to deliver circus-based activities tailored to enhance children’s speech, language and overall cognitive development. Over the past three years, Circus Train the Trainer has reached over 600 primary school children, with extraordinary results

  • Language Development: In partnership with Rochdale’s Early Help and Schools, Children participating in this programme, advanced their language and literacy skills by an average of 1 year in a single term, an outcome that exceeded expectations.
  • Engagement and Confidence: 90% of teachers reported that students showed increased classroom participation and improved confidence.
  • Motor Skills and Concentration: Circus activities develop fine and gross motor skills, which research shows is vital for young learners’ language development and concentration. Teachers noted that students showed increased focus, resilience and a readiness to learn across subjects.

“These results point to the remarkable potential of circus arts as an innovative educational tool, particularly at a time when the demand for mental health and language support far outstrips available resources”

Martine Bradford, Creative Director

Evidence Based Impact: How Circus is Helping Schools Bridge the Gap

The Circus Train the Trainer programme has provided primary schools with a measurable and immediate solution to improve students’ language and literacy outcomes. With waiting times for specialist support exceeding 18 months in some regions, schools are often left to tackle these issues independently. Our programme has demonstrated a tangible improvement, reflected in standardised literacy and Welcomm scores, with children achieving developmental milestones faster than through traditional methods alone.

Additionally, Circus programme complements the UK government’s call for promoting and supporting mental health and wellbeing in schools and colleges, using creative approaches to mental health and well-being. Studies highlight that physically engaging and skill-based activities like circus arts help children manage anxiety, build self-esteem, and improve overall emotional resilience. Teachers have seen firsthand how circus skills are a powerful tool for self-expression, offering students a sense of accomplishment and pride.

The Power of Collaboration: Creating Long-Term Change

Circus Train the Trainer is more than just a school programme; it’s a community initiative. By working alongside schools, local authorities and mental health professionals, Skylight Circus Arts is paving the way for a sustainable model that could be scaled nationally. Our partnerships allow for tailored, flexible approaches to meet specific local needs, ensuring that every child has access to the life-changing benefits of circus arts.

“Our flexible approach allows us to create bespoke delivery options for each school. We work alongside teachers and pupils to create the greatest possible impact.
