Celebrating a Brilliant Mayor’s Youth Award Win

We are so proud to celebrate one of our brilliant youth circus members, who has been recognised with the Courage and Confidence Award at Rochdale’s Mayor’s Youth Awards earlier this year!

He first came to Skylight through a summer holiday project in Kirkholt, where he quickly caught the “circus bug”. From there, he joined our Youth Circus and later became part of our Spotlight Youth Performance Troupe.

As one of the youngest members of the troupe, he was thrown straight into rehearsals for Spotlight’s debut show, Sky-Fi. Although he was quiet at first, we watched his confidence grow week by week. He began sharing ideas, working with new people and becoming a valued part of the group.

He is thoughtful, reliable and always looking out for his peers. Whether he is making sure equipment is ready, supporting younger children or helping pack away after workshops, he shows real care for the people around him.

Over the summer, he regularly came along to local events and drop-in workshops, including sessions in Kirkholt and one very wet afternoon in Queen’s Park. Rain or shine, he stayed to help, demonstrating circus skills to the public and encouraging others to have a go.

After learning more about the challenges small arts charities face, he decided he wanted to give something back. Through a sponsored bike ride, he raised an incredible £300 for Skylight, helping to support the work that gives other young people opportunities like the ones he has had.

You can read more about that here.

His kindness, commitment and quiet leadership make him a credit to himself, his family and his community.

A huge congratulations on this very well-deserved award. We are incredibly proud to have him as part of our Skylight family.
