The Rochdale Scorpion Walk

We are delighted to say that we are fully booked for our Scorpion and circus walk on the 12th June!  Our walks were planned to happen last year but everything has been on hold due to covid restrictions.

In early 2020 the young people from our Spotlight Troupe worked hard on a show called Mammoth which was funded by The Arts Council.  We also gained Heritage Lottery Funding to research fossils and the landscapes they came from in the Borough of Rochdale.  We visited the wonderful exhibition at Touchstones and visited key sites with our young people, Silver Circus, volunteers and Trustees.

If you would like to try the walks, PDF maps are available below.  We have 3 walks which are beautifully created and illustrated by Smuzz and Eira!  There’s also much more information on our research below.  We hope you try the walks and enjoy our fantastic countryside in the Borough!

Free Circus Event

Free circus session at Skylight Circus

Join Skylight Circus Arts for a free circus workshop and guided walk to the site of the famous ‘Rochdale Scorpion’ fossil find.

Have a go at juggling and plate-spinning at our HQ near the centre of Rochdale before heading out through Broadfield Park to see where local woman, Mary Lange, made her discovery in 1903. There are lots of points of interest along the way.

After heading back to Touchstones Museum and Gallery in Rochdale Town Centre you can grab yourself a brew and cake at a special price. Then settle in for a short film produced by Skylight featuring a much more recent fossil find… Mammoth.

These events are part of the National Lottery Open Week #ThanksToYou and are made possible with the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund.  CLICK HERE TO BOOK YOUR FREE TICKETS.

The Joy of Circus!

We recently ran Side by Side circus sessions for young people and their families.  Sessions helped young people who might be experiencing stress and anxiety or who have individual needs.  We frequently talk about how circus can improve confidence, self esteem and social skills.  We know that fun circus sessions can keep us fit but sometimes it’s great to see it in a little video…..

“This is why we love what we do!” Martine Bradford Creative Director

BGT Star with Silver Circus!

A star guest tutor dropped in on zoom this week! Steve Royle shot to fame coming 3rd in Britain’s Got Talent 2020.  He’s also known as ‘that juggler in Phoenix Nights Live at Manchester Arena!’  The talented Comedian, Radio Presenter, Actor, Panto performer and Dad shared some skills with Silver Circus.

“I first met Steve in 1989 at our first open circus session in Oulderhill School,  Steve was a performing arts student and then got a job at Granada Studios.  It was great to see him live on our zoom channel, we had a lot of laughs!  We did a funny face warm up, mime skills and even made a tea towel chicken” Jim Riley

“A huge thank you to Henry Smith Community Match Challenge fund for helping us to continue our work through lockdown.  Thanks for the smiles Steve!” Martine Bradford

Skylight’s New CEO!

We are delighted to welcome David Allen as our new Chief Executive Officer!  David will be managing operations, freeing up the creative team, led by Skylight’s Creative Director Martine Bradford, to focus on bringing more shows and workshops to people throughout Rochdale, Greater Manchester and the North West.

Jim Riley, Chair of the Board and founder of Skylight, said “David has a wide variety of marketing, development and operations experience gained while working in the music and entertainment industries for many years. More recently he’s gained some grassroots arts experience, working as a freelance consultant on several projects in Rochdale.”

“Skylight has done brilliant work over the past 30 years and the team is massively respected by arts organisations not just in Rochdale but around the UK and beyond. Skylight was founded on the principles of bringing the joy, physical and emotional benefits of circus to anyone and everyone, regardless of age, background and ability. These principles are just as important now, perhaps more so given the challenges we all currently face. My job is to help make sure we can offer that to as many people as possible,” said David.

Skylight’s usual programme is currently adapted due to government guidelines but they continue to run online sessions and encourage anyone interested in participating to get in touch via

“A big warm Skylight welcome to David!” Martine Bradford
